She Matters hosts roundtable discussion on gender realities for refugee women

We proudly hosted our first event of the year – a roundtable discussion, ‘Gender in Focus: Transforming forced migration into powerfully elegant trailblazing.’ The event was organised as a part of the  ‘My Human Rights Hero’ exhibition, which features the stories of seven inspiring individuals, including our founder & CEO Christina Moreno, who each have a special connection with The Hague.

Gender realities for refugee women

‘The acute vulnerability of women and girls on the move is not a sign of weakness – it’s a sign of inequality.’ – Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

The roundtable focused on our work at She Matters and gender and migration issues. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) outlines our most basic rights and dignities which are universal and inalienable. As featured in the ‘My Human Rights Hero’ exhibition, Article 2 resonates most with our founder & CEO, Christina Moreno. And its principle of universality – whoever, whatever and wherever you are – lies at the very heart of She Matters. Sadly, we’re not there yet.

Today, 50% of refugees uprooted from their homes are women and girls. And their specific needs and voices are often neglected. These women have resilience, they cope, they adapt, and they take action to shape their futures. But more effective and better-targeted policy-making and responses are needed.

Thank you to those who attended! We welcome everyone to join us in our efforts to tackle inequalities. Only together can we make Article 2 a reality.
